An alarming new report released by the United Nations says roughly one million species of animals and plants are on the verge of extinction, with experts predicting grave consequences for humans. Nature is declining globally, at rates unprecedented in human history and the rate of species extinctions is accelerating, but it is not too late to make a difference if action starts now at every level from local to global.
Employees from the Siemens Healthineers, Swords, Ireland, are keen to reverse this trend.
As a business supporter for the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, we realise how important bees are in the pollination of plants. They help pollinate both crops and native plants, making bees of huge economic and ecological importance to Ireland
Early May saw thousands of bees moving into their new home at our Siemens Healthineers site. The North Dublin Bee Keeping Association donated a hive of 15,000 bees to support our Biodiversity program in conjunction with the all-Ireland Pollinator Plan.
Business partners and Biodiversity Team members Tom Matthews and Jim O’Carroll completed a 6-week beekeeping course with the North Dublin Bee Keeping Association. They learned how to manage bees – the life cycle of the colony, bee diseases, treatments, feeding, swarm control and last, but not least, how to harvest honey.
The bee hive is now settled in a remote corner of the 16-acre site at Swords where we have reduced grass mowing in the area to allow a meadow to flourish and provide the optimal environment for our bees to thrive. The Biodiversity Team plans to supplement this meadow with additional plants which we cultivated in our site garden. We expect bee numbers to increase from 15,000 to over 40,000 during the summer months which will give us the opportunity to establish an additional hive which we will give back to the North Dublin Bee Keeping Association – that’s biodiversity in action.
At the Swords site, both inside and out, it’s a hive of activity, watch out for the first jars of Siemens Healthineers honey!!!
Biodiversity has been central in conversations about climate change. Preserving natural habitats and saving different species from extinction has been presented as a key component of taking climate action and has a central role in major conversations about our environmental impact, such as the upcoming COP26 UN Climate Change conference. But why should businesses be
Intel Ireland has a long history of leading on voluntary on-site biodiversity action in Ireland. Since its arrival in Kildare, the company has enhanced, restored and created biodiverse habitats in and around its campus and amplified impact beyond the limits of its site by supporting local partnerships for nature and engaging employees in its efforts
The impact of plastic on the environment has been a central focus in discussions around climate action for the past few years. Most recently, the European Union banned single-use plastic in its member states, recognising the impact of plastic pollution and the importance of reducing and eliminating plastic on the journey towards a sustainable economy.
