BITCI News - Apr 29, 2020

In light of the outbreak of Covid-19, the Business Impact campaign for 2020 had been replaced with #BusinessResponseIRL to profile the amazing support that BITCI member companies are providing to their colleagues, customers, communities and suppliers in this time of crisis. However the impact made by BITCI member companies in 2019 is still something to very much be proud of and today we are sharing these stats and stories.

In 2019, 63 Business in the Community Ireland members contributed almost €38 million to charities and community groups last year while employees volunteered for 341,856 hours.

€19.6 million was given in cash donations; €12.1 million was contributed through in-kind donations and over €6.1 million was raised through employee fundraising.

This shows an increase of 29% in volunteer hours, 45% in cash donations, along with moderate increases in employee fundraising and in-kind donations in comparison to the collective totals of the 60 companies who participated last year.

You can see the impact each individual company made, including Impact Stories from almost half of the participating companies to give you a greater sense of the impact achieved for their charity partners.

Our CSR Adviser Shane Mulchrone as part of our BITCI Webinar Series has provided some key tips in how to support your community partners in this time of crisis:

  • Check in with your existing community partners – especially those you have a strategic relationship with, how are they coping, what do they need?
  • Create an inventory list of supports that you as a company can now provide in this emergency. This may have changed from a couple of weeks ago.
  • Consider the themes and objectives of your community investment strategy before making any new investment decision.
  • Enourmous negative impact on community & voluntary sector to date and expected to get worse in the near future, especially regarding funding, new resources to support vulnerable communities during crisis, food donations and getting existing services online.
  • Department of Rural and Community Development in partnership with Volunteer Ireland have developed a Community Response Action plan which you can see here
  • There is no shortage of funding opportunities for corporates to support – individual charity COVID funds and wider community funds such as Community Foundation for Ireland Fund
