Musgrave MarketPlace, Ireland’s leading wholesale supplier to retail, foodservice and SME businesses has invested significantly in the brand over the past two years which has seen Musgrave MarketPlace continue to redefine wholesale on the island of Ireland. Musgrave believes that everyone has a responsibility to leave a positive impact on the world around them and to influence others to do likewise. This makes doing the right thing by the planet integral to doing the right thing for people, communities and business.
The Musgrave Sustainability plan includes the reduction of energy consumption of the SuperValu and Centra brands in Ireland by 20% by 2020 through a combination of behavioural change, energy equipment upgrades and innovation. Key to the success of this plan is Musgrave Market Place leading by example.
The relaunch of the Musgrave MarketPlace brand began in November 2016 with the opening of the flagship Ballymun Food Emporium. This was followed with investment in Robinhood branch in 2017 and further refurbishments are underway in 2018.
Improving the energy efficiency was a high priority. Advances in lighting technology resulted in a reduction in the lighting electrical loads of almost 70%. Refrigeration upgrades including the new low temperature refrigeration equipment with lower energy consumption, less maintenance and easier serviceability has significantly reduced the refrigeration electrical load in each facility.
Energy savings from the two Food Emporium refurbishments are in excess of 600,000kWh annually. Commenting on the energy savings Mr John Curran, Musgrave Head of Sustainability, said:
“We are very pleased that our commitment to energy efficiency and investment in new energy-efficient technology has enabled us to continue to reduce our consumption of energy. Improving energy efficiency has been a high priority for our business over many years. Our success has been achieved through the of dedication of colleagues, alongside a combination of energy monitoring & targeting and regular system upgrades and improvements.”
