Michelle and Ivana 2016GMIT’s Mayo Campus engaged in the Skills @ Work Programme with Scoil Muire & Padraig Secondary School, Swinford for the first time in 2015. This partnership has proved to be a very successful and informative experience with both the students and third level college staff learning and growing from the process.

GMIT delivered informative sessions on topics such as CV preparation, mock interviews, interpersonal skills through using experiential learning, a day in the life of GMIT employees, access and supports available at third level, experiences of graduates and students of GMIT Mayo, and Jobs for the Future conference with representation from 40 different career areas.

Ivana Neary, GMIT programme co-ordinator, said:

“Staff in GMIT Mayo thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They were very willing to get involved and create a bond and linkage with both the students and the school. We were fortunate to be able to give students a unique insight not just into the world of work but to opportunities and supports in order to further their education at third level.”

“The feedback from the students was very encouraging with 80% of them rating the experience as enjoyable and 20% very enjoyable. This was felt to be a very good response particularly in the first year. It is planned to take the feedback from this experience and develop the programme further for future years.”
