Local students visit Corrib as part of Engineers Week
‘Engineering is not just a job; it is a fascinating career that can take you anywhere in the world!’ That was the message from Bellanaboy as Shell E&P Ireland Limited (SEPIL) hosted a group of secondary school students as part of national Engineers Week.
Sixty students from Gaelcholáiste Chomáin, Rossport and St Brendan’s College, Belmullet visited the Bellanaboy Bridge Gas Terminal where they were able to see and hear how important engineering is in delivering major infrastructure projects across the country.
Fun was at the heart of the visit. Teamwork, design, cost and innovation were to the fore as the students were given a simple challenge of transferring water using handmade pumps. “There was a great atmosphere especially during the team challenge when the students and teachers worked together to produce some great engineering solutions”, said Tony Reilly, a Mechanical Engineer from SEPIL. “Some of our own engineers even learnt a lesson or two in water management from the students!” he said.
Colette Deane, a teacher at Gaelcholáiste Chomáin said the students were delighted with their visit to the Bellanaboy gas terminal: “This was a wonderful opportunity for the students to see such a huge engineering project up close and they really enjoyed their visit. I want to thank the engineers at Corrib for taking the time to explain their roles and for encouraging the students as they consider their future career options.”
Speaking following the visit, Tony Reilly said, “As a local engineer it was wonderful to welcome the students and to encourage them to consider engineering as a possible career. Corrib is one of the most complex and challenging engineering projects ever undertaken in Ireland. Many of the engineers here have worked on other large projects all over the world. This visit enabled us to show the students how the many facets of engineering have come together to deliver this project.”
Fionnuala Kilbane from Engineers Ireland said “Engineers Week is all about getting students interested and enthused about engineering. The best ambassadors are those working in the profession who can really bring to life the benefit their work has on communities in Ireland and overseas.”
