Shell supports Irish language students

For the second year in a row Shell E&P Ireland Ltd will support a number of students to undertake scholarships at Irish language summer colleges in Erris. The scheme, which will see ten scholarships awarded to the successful candidates, is open to students attending any of the four second level colleges in the area.

The objective of the programme is to contribute to the long-term cultural development of Erris by encouraging students to improve their oral skills in their native language and to complement existing measures for language support.

The scheme was opened to applications at the end of March and attracted 34 entries. Applicants had to write a 200 word essay “as gaeilge” to convince the selection panel of their case for a scholarship.

The selection process will be undertaken by the Corrib Natural Gas 3rd Level Scholarship Board and ten scholarships will be awarded.

Later in the year, the Corrib Natural Gas Scholarship scheme will allocate sixteen scholarships, each valued at €2,000 per year of their course, to students from Erris attending third level colleges throughout the country.

The 3rd level scholarship programme is now in its seventh year.
