Friday, August 3rd 2012: When we hear about Shell and the Corrib Gas field, the images that spring to mind are of lines of angry protestors and Guards. Undoubtedly, Shell’s engagement with the local community in Mayo has been through troubled times. Though it’s not making the headlines, this relationship has changed and improved a lot over the past few years. A key factor in changing the relationship between Shell and the local community has been Shell’s Community Investment programme in Erris. Led by Fiona Togher, Shell’s Community Investment Advisor, this programme has three strands – a Local Grants Programme, Third Level Scholarships and the Corrib Natural Gas Erris Development Fund. Shell has shown how using good corporate responsibility practices and sensitive engagement with communities can impact even the most difficult situations.
