This year, Abbott published its sixth report on sustainability in Ireland. Abbott is a global healthcare leader that helps people live more fully at all stages of life. With almost 4,000 employees, Ireland has one of the largest populations of Abbott employees. The company serves the Irish market with a diverse range of health care products including diagnostics, medical devices and nutrition products.

Sustainability at Abbott is about applying the power of our business to drive positive economic, social and environmental impact – making sure that the work we do helps people live healthier and better, both today and for generations to come.

Some highlights of Abbott’s sustainability work in Ireland include:

  • Reduced absolute waste by 21% and carbon emissions by 28% since 2010.
  • 100% of purchased electricity sources from renewable sources at all manufacturing sites.
  • Abbott’s nutrition business has more than 80 directors enrolled in their bespoke Abbott Management and Leadership Programme for Directors of Nursing which aims to improve the health and well-being of nursing home residents.
  • The Ireland Chapter of Women Leaders of Abbott (WLA) launched in January 2018. Women Leaders of Abbott is a global organization that takes a proactive role in connecting women and offering dynamic programs and initiatives to enhance leadership experiences and career development of women at Abbott.
  • Abbott employees volunteered more than 70,000 hours to local community and charitable organizations in Ireland through our Croi an Óir volunteering programme over the last 10 years.

“Throughout Abbott’s businesses in Ireland, we aim to ensure that our operations are thriving by implementing economic, environmental and social initiatives that meet the demands of a fast-moving global business environment, as well as our local communities. We are continually creating exciting opportunities for talented individuals with determined and agile minds: people who continue to support Abbott’s product innovation; people who can make our processes and our supply chain more efficient and sustainable; people who are keen to develop life-changing solutions and positively impact our environment, as well as give back to the community,” said Conor Murphy, site director Abbott Diagnostics Division Longford.
