Symantec & St. Francis Hospice

At Symantec, employees are key players in the success of our Corporate Responsibility (CR) program. The activism, advocacy, and passion of employees on the ground is what transforms our CR strategy into tangible, real-world results. We’ve built a culture that encourages employees to apply their time and talents to the issues they care most deeply about, through our Matching Gift, Dollars for Doers, and Global Service Week programs.

St. Francis Hospice provides a specialist care service for the people of North Dublin City and county, supporting more than 1,500 patients annually. The Hospice is based on a large site with many gardens, which offer a quiet place for patients and families to reflect.

In October 2016, Symantec employee volunteers arrived at St. Francis Hospice with 2,000 daffodil and tulip bulbs, compost, spades, gardening gloves, trowels and a can-do attitude. Volunteers spent the week planting as part of our Global Service Week, an annual company-wide week of community service.

Since that first volunteer activity, Symantec has supported St. Francis Hospice in numerous ways, including:

  • Sprucing up the gardens during Global Service Week 2018
  • Arranging a clothing collection and raising over €500, which was then matched by Symantec
  • Providing a grant of $2,500
  • Bringing joy, happiness and laughter to the patients at a Symantec employee choir performance

Through our efforts in 2018 alone, 29 employees volunteered with the Hospice, providing 92 volunteer hours.

Creating beautiful gardens have helped to brighten the days and lift the spirits of patients during a very difficult time. As the hospice is not fully funded by a government body, the financial support Symantec provided has helped the hospice continue its vital service to society.

In addition to a garden in full bloom each spring, Symantec’s volunteer efforts have had an environmental impact, increasing the bio-diversity of the site. Symantec is committed to climate action and UN Sustainable Development Goal 13. In addition to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions significantly in recent years, our volunteer efforts at the hospice speak to our commitment to improve environmental education and raise awareness (Target 13.3). We’re continuing our efforts to inspire employees to make sustainable choices, to become environmental stewards, and to help Symantec build a more sustainable future through our Choosing Green in 2019 initiative.
