Fidelity & Scoil Bhríde

Fidelity Investments is a diversified financial services company based in Boston with a global presence that spans countries across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Fidelity Ireland strives for excellence in our business, in engagements with our communities and in advancing the technology ecosystem in Ireland. This is evident from CEO leadership to employee activation.

Our CSR program, Fidelity Cares, empowers our employees to actively contribute and create a connection with the local communities in which they live and work, in a manner that is meaningful to them. We provide employee volunteer opportunities that support students and families with the educational foundation to attain personal and financial success. This foundation begins with the basics – a quality, core education delivered in an environment that helps students thrive.

Our ambition to support STEM education in Ireland in becoming more inclusive of females, focuses on increasing participation rates in primary, secondary and graduate programmes. Last year we launched a partnership with Scoil Bride (Mercy Secondary School) in Tuam, Galway to support them as they pilot the computer science leaving certificate curriculum. The partnership entails a multifaceted approach to supporting this all-girls school on its objective to increase the uptake in STEAM [science, technology, engineering, arts and maths]. Our support includes the delivery of hardware equipment, introducing these students to role models in technology, delivering student workshops and technology and career talks, and hosting Fidelity office visits. Our partnership will also focus on the teachers via a teacher mentorship programme, supporting them in the Leaving Certificate computer science pilot programme.

Fidelity is committed to effecting sustainable change for women in technology within Fidelity, our local communities and industry. By engaging early in the life cycle, we hope to influence the career aspirations of female students and create a new generation of technologists. In Fidelity, we like to call it ‘paying IT forward’.

Rachel Brennan, IT teacher with Scoil Bhríde believes the partnership with Fidelity Investments is second to none, ‘To a school, the amount of help and engagement we receive is phenomenal. We know girls are needed in industry but we are awe struck by the amount of help we’re receiving on every front – not all of the 40 participating schools in the computer science curriculum pilot are receiving that’.
