This month, children and staff from Breaffy National School went on a fantastic workplace visit to the Mayo County Council offices in Castlebar.

On arrival, the children were led to the Council Chamber where they were greeted by their volunteers. The children were each assigned seats as though they were Councillors themselves!

The Cathaoirleach Al McDonnell, was also there to welcome them wearing his chain of office. He told the children all about how local Government works, and the sort of topics that are discussed at the monthly council meeting.

The volunteers then told the children all about their various roles within the Council. One volunteer, who works in IT, dismantled a computer and showed the group all the different parts and how they work.

The Mayo County Council Volunteers screened a brilliant video of children reading all over the world, showing how important reading is for our communication skills.

Lastly, there was a trip to the Council restaurant for much appreciated refreshments so the children could chat and unwind with their volunteers!
