Shortlists announced for the 2008 European Business Awards for the Environment

The shortlists for the 2008 European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE) were announced today, following a two-day meeting by the jury in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Some 125 entries were received this year, and the shortlists were selected by an independent jury consisting of 18 high-level experts from various EU Member States including Eva Geluk, Consultant with Business in the Community Ireland.

The bi-annual awards were established by the European Commission Environment Directorate-General in 1987 to identify and reward European companies that set an example by combining innovation, economic viability and environmental concern. The winners will be selected from the 11 shortlisted companies and announced in Brussels on 3 June 2008.

- The Co-operative Group Ltd (UK)
- TRIIP Ltd (Estonia)

Products (35 entries)
- Ertex-solar GmbH (Austria)
- JCDecaux SA (France)
- Red Eléctrica de España (Spain)

Processes (42 entries)
- BAYER AG (Germany
- CHOREN Ltd (Germany)
- DHV B.V. (The Netherlands)

International co-operation (10 entries)
- KIT (Royal Tropical Institute)/Holding/Mali BioCarburant SA (The Netherlands): Sustainable biodiesel production in Mali; and
- Windkraft Simonsfeld GmbH (Austria): EL SOL - solar-thermal water heating systems through renewable energy promotion in Bolivia
National and European competitions


The EBAE 2008 Award Ceremony will be held in Brussels during Green Week 2008, which takes place from Tuesday 3 to Friday 6 June. Green Week will be taking a closer look at the sustainable use of natural resources, focusing on waste management, sustainable consumption and production.
